here's my (semi) final, did a little touch up after i took this photo. i found that the yellow was important to the feeling of being there. oil on linen, 8.5x11"
i'm copying 'mountain stream, tyrol' by john singer sargent, a master of masters whose brushwork is superb. thought i would first sketch to familiarize myself with the way he's laid things out. graphite in the 7x9" sketchbook
another 3 image panorama from lassen park. think it's lake shasta in the distance, not sure. it was an overcast day, or the sun would have been really bright reflecting off the snow.
3 photos stitched together, just 1 spectacular view from lassen national park. this is mid-july, and the road has only been cleared for 2 weeks. elevation is around 8,500 ft here. Redding, at 500 ft elevation and 50 miles away is a baking 112 degrees. we were comfortable in shirtsleeves, about 75 degrees i'd guess.
went to montana de oro state park, cool grays. good smell. lively sounds. the ocean is many senses delight. i forgot that i love it there! this painting needs some work on the foreground; i am happy with the rest. 10x12" oil on raymar canvas panel.
need to do a little work on this yet, but it's better than the one i did from this location last year. it is gratifying to see improvement! 10x12" oil on raymar canvas panel.
it is somewhat difficult to get a good photo of this painting, glare and too many light values. looks better in person. (really!) "Jordan" 11x9.5" oil on linen
have decided to do a painting of a little girl named jordan, a photo from wetcanvas' image library. first i did a drawing in graphite in the sketchbook.
this is an unfinished portrait from a photo at wetcanvas' weekend drawing event. it was fun to use pastels for a change, i actually used some painting techniques on this which was new to me. 12x9" pastel on art spectrum soft umber paper.
copying old master works is a valuable learning tool. here is the beginning of my attempt to copy franz hals "malle babbe" (the witch of harlem) a painting from about 1635. i started with a dulled sienna tone overall. much of what appears to be light is glare on wet paint. oil on raymar canvas panel, 12x10".
done from a photo, not a good likeness but it does look like a man so im satisfied. i really like this sketchbook, its a good size (9x7) and the pages lay flat. changed image mode to grayscale in photoshop to lose the annoying color cast.
second step. at this stage the canvas texture is a little annoying, next time i will likely undercoat with my usual gray gesso mix. but i do like the proportions of the 12x10" panel for this subject.
got some 'raymar' canvas panels to try, and set up some of my fave flowers to test it out. a wet run, so to speak, b4 i take the panels out to plein air. 12x10"
